Usage
Pressinoic acid is a fatty acid that has been shown to act as a potent antagonist of the GABAA receptor. It inhibits locomotor activity and causes seizures in animals. Pressinoic acid is also an inhibitor of the infectious diseases such as herpes, influenza, and rabies. This compound binds to the adenine nucleotide on the GABAA receptor and prevents chloride ions from entering the cell by inhibiting water permeability. The interaction of pressinoic acid with the GABAA receptor inhibits inhibitory neuronal activity, which leads to seizures. Pressinoic acid may be used for treatment of epilepsy, Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders. Pressinoic acid is a potent agonist of the GABAA receptor that can be found in peptide hormones such as vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone). It is synthesized by disulfide bond formation between two cysteine residues in its amino acid sequence. X-ray diffraction data has revealed
